Graham Simpson MSP has called the number of children living in temporary accommodation in Scotland a "mark of shame" for the Scottish Government.
During a Labour Party Business debate yesterday, the MSP for Central Scotland discussed Shelter Scotland's "In their Words" report about the experiences of Scottish children in temporary accommodation.
Graham Simpson MSP said: "It is now nearly a year since the Scottish Government accepted what the rest of us already knew and declared a housing emergency.
"It is a year of missed opportunities and increasing misery for those who do not have a permanent place to call home.
"Shelter Scotland's report should make the Government sit up. Children spoke of living miles away from friends and of sleeping in beds covered with black mould, placed in accommodation with urine-soaked carpets, dead rats and broken windows, with no access to decent cooking and washing facilities. They spoke of lack of sleep, poor nutrition and hygiene, repeated hospital visits and all this leading to a great emotional toll for children and their families.
"The reality of life for some people in Scotland is a badge of shame that should make any housing minister consider their position".
