I was delighted to be at the launch of a new youth volunteering programme recently. PAS (Planning Aid for Scotland) is a charity that offers free planning advice and a mentoring service to community groups, young people, volunteers, and for those simply interested in how planning is shaping their environment.
PAS does not advocate for or against plans or proposals, rather enables people to become involved in plans for their local community from the earliest opportunity.
As PAS approaches its 25th anniversary, the organisation launched a new programme to encourage young people living in Scotland to take the lead as active citizens in their local communities.
It is especially significant as 2018 has been designated Year of Young People that this programme will allow young volunteers to actively participating in the decision-making processes and have their voice heard in the places they live.
During the launch, we heard how those taking part will be able to work towards the PAS Youth Volunteer Award, with the potential to earn Young Scot Card Rewards, which involves completing ten hours of volunteering in areas matched to their interests and skills.
Chair of PAS, Irene Beautyman, said: “As our present and future generation, Scotland’s young people are crucial to creating great places, and it is vital their voices are heard.
“Our Youth Volunteering Programme and Award is an important step in helping create a Scotland where young people feel empowered to be active citizens in their local communities.”
I couldn't agree more with Irene, in 2018 we have a real chance to make this a reality, thanks to youth volunteering programme like this.
