Today at Public Audit Committee, GP leaders revealed that their profession is in "crisis" with a risk of possible disruptive action. Dr Iain Morrison, chair of the general practice committee at the BMA Scotland union told the committee that he "does not see a sustainable future" for GP services in Scotland and without £290 million extra funding from the Scottish Government, the "sinking ship" will "go under".
Dr Morrison described a wellbeing and funding survey to which 90% of GPs responded that they were considering disruptive action. When Graham Simpson MSP put this to NHS Scotland chief executive Caroline Lamb, she revealed that ministers were in discussion with the BMA about this and "there remains much more to be done".
Graham Simpson MSP said: "This was a damning session - Scotland's general practice is in crisis and the Scottish Government isn't doing enough to support GPs.
It's little wonder that Scotland's overworked GPs are considering industrial action. I sincerely hope that Neil Gray is able to do something to improve the situation."
