The fight to save the Woodhall and Faskine greenbelt will reach Holyrood next week.
Tory MSP Graham Simpson has secured a debate in the chamber on the proposed development of the land between Calderbank and Carnbroe.
Many locals, including the campaign group Save Woodhall and Faskine (SWAF), are heading through to Edinburgh to listen to the debate on Thursday which will take place right after First Minister's Questions at 12.45pm.
SWAF was formed after developers Orchard Brae outlined plans to build thousands of homes on the local historic woodland and has been a vocal opponent of this plan from the outset.
Mr Simpson said: “It is important that we safeguard the greenbelt and the benefits it brings not only to the local residents but those who travel from further afield to explore the stunning nature trails.
“I’m delighted to be able to offer my help and support to the local community who are up in arms at the proposal to build thousands of homes on their cherished woodland.
“They have opposed this development from the moment the plans to wipe-out this beautiful part of Lanarkshire were first unveiled.
“The fact that my motion for debate on this issue had plenty of cross-party support tells you how important this debate is to many MSPs from across the political spectrum.
“The health benefits alone should be reason enough to stop this development in its tracks.
“We have had some success to date when along with the Woodland Trust for Scotland I secured a tree preservation order on some of the areas that have been earmarked for development.
“I would urge anyone who can, to come through next Thursday and help us send out a strong message that we will not stand back and let this historic woodland be wiped out without a fight.”
